Downpipe servicing is the clearing, flushing and checking of the vertical pipes that carry water from your gutters to the stormwater system. Gutters collect the water, but downpipes are what get rid of it, and a single blocked downpipe can back water up along an entire gutter run until it overflows, no matter how clean the gutter is.
A downpipe check and clear is already included in every regular clean, and a full check and flush comes with every deep clean. This standalone service is for when the downpipes themselves are the problem.
Downpipes usually block in one of three places: at the outlet, where leaves and tennis balls gather; partway down, where wet debris compacts at a bend or join; or at the base, where the pipe meets the stormwater connection. Because the blockage is hidden inside the pipe, it’s often only discovered when water starts appearing where it shouldn’t.
And that water does damage. A blocked downpipe backs water up the gutter until it overflows against fascias and eaves, sprays from joins onto brickwork, and pools against walls and footings. Persistent damp at the base of a wall is a repair conversation nobody wants, and it very often traces back to one blocked pipe.

The clearest sign is water overflowing at one spot during rain while the rest of the gutter run is behaving. Other giveaways include gurgling sounds from the pipe, water spraying from a join partway down, pooling at the base of the pipe, and a downpipe outlet that stays dry in rain while the gutter above it fills. If you’re seeing any of these, the gutter usually isn’t the problem, the pipe is, and clearing it is a much smaller job before the overflow finds its way into fascias, eaves or brickwork.
Yes. Every regular clean includes a downpipe check and clearing, and every deep clean includes a full downpipe check and flush, so if you’re booking a gutter clean you don’t need to add this separately. This standalone service exists for when downpipes are the specific problem: a known blockage, recurring overflow at one corner, or a property where the gutters are fine but the water clearly isn’t getting away. We clear and flush the downpipe itself, from the gutter outlet down to where it meets the stormwater connection at ground level, and we confirm water is actually flowing away at that point. If the blockage turns out to be further along, underground in the stormwater line itself, that’s a job for a drainage plumber with jetting equipment, and we’ll tell you that straight rather than pretending we’ve fixed it. You’ll know exactly where the problem is, with photos, so the right trade can deal with it first visit.
Almost always the same recipe: leaves and debris wash off the roof into the gutter, get pulled toward the outlet, and compact inside the pipe, usually at a bend, a join, or the base. Fine silt and seed material binds it all together into a plug that rain alone won’t shift. Tennis balls, bird nests and shuttlecocks turn up more often than you’d think. Gutters that aren’t cleaned regularly feed their downpipes a constant supply of material, which is why downpipe checks are built into every clean we do.
Yes, and often in ways that don’t look like a gutter problem at first. Backed up water overflows against fascias and eaves, which leads to rot, peeling paint and ceiling damp. Water spraying from pipe joins soaks brickwork in the same spot every time it rains. And water pooling at the base of a blocked pipe sits against walls and footings, which is where persistent damp problems start. Most of these show up as mystery moisture issues, and a surprising number of the leaks our roofing team investigates trace back to one blocked pipe.
